Home Insurance FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • What factors can affect my home insurance premium?

Several factors influence your premium, including the location of your home, its age, construction materials, security features, and your claims history. We can help you understand how these factors affect your premium and find ways to potentially reduce it.

  • How is the amount of dwelling coverage determined on a home insurance policy?

The amount of dwelling coverage is typically based on the replacement cost of your home. It is calculated by estimating the cost to rebuild or repair your home using similar materials and construction techniques in the event of a covered loss.

  • Why is the replacement cost used instead of the market value of the home? Can the replacement cost be higher or lower than the market value of the home?

The purpose of home insurance is to make you whole after a loss.  This is why insurance companies will insure your home for a replacement cost which reflects the expenses associated with rebuilding your home from scratch, including materials, labor, and other construction costs. The market value, on the other hand, considers factors such as the land value and location, which are not directly related to the cost of rebuilding.  It is common for the replacement cost to differ from the market value of your home which can be higher or lower depending on numerous different factors.

  • Can I adjust my coverage limits over time?

Yes, it’s essential to review your coverage limits periodically to ensure they align with the replacement cost of your home and your possessions inside. Our agents can assist you in evaluating and adjusting your coverage as needed.

  • Are floods or earthquakes covered by standard home insurance?

Typically, floods and earthquakes are not covered by standard home insurance policies. However, we can help you explore separate policies or endorsements to protect your home against these specific causes of loss.
